- Period 38 Week 14 Preparing date: 06/12/2021 Teaching date : 08/12/ 2021 UNIT 6: VIET NAM: THEN AND NOW Lesson 4: Skills 1 A.Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: - read for general and specific information about the tram system in Ha Noi then and now. - talk about changes in transport and other fields in the neighborhood and express opinions about these changes. B. Language knowledge: 1. Structures: the present simple, the past simple, adjective clauses, comparisons. 2. Vocabulary: suburban (adj), launch (v), compartment (n), suffer(v), mushroom (v), illiteracy (n). C. Teaching aids 1. Teacher: Textbook, workbook, teaching plan, audio-visual aids 2. Students: Textbook, workbook. D. Skills: 1. Main skills: : Reading 2. Sub skills : Speaking, listening and writing E. Procedures: I. Warm-up: (3’) - Have SS watch the video to guess the topic of the lesson. II. Reading: 1. Act 1 (5’): Discussion - Have SS look at the two pictures and discuss the questions. - Elicit the answers from Ss. Give Ss two minutes to skim the article and compare their answers with the information in the article. Suggested answers: 1. The first picture shows an old tram. The second picture shows a modern train. 2. The tram would have been seen in a town or city. These trains can be seen nowadays in big, modern cities. 3. They are different in many ways: - The first had fewer compartments (two or three) than the second (four). - The first runs much more slowly. - The first is not air-conditioned while the second is. - The first runs along tracks on the ground at street level, while the second runs on elevated tracks. - The first was powered by overhead electricity wires, while the second runs on electromagnetics. 2. Act 2: True or false (8’) - Have SS run through the statements. Pay attention to key words in each statement. - SS work in pairs to predict and choose T or F. - Then allow them to share answers before checking as a class. T notes down on the board. 1
- - Have SS read the article to check their prediction. - T reminds some key words and check the answers as a whole class. Ask SS to explain why some statements are false and make correction if possible. * Key: 1. F (to tell about the tram system in Ha Noi: Then and now) 2. T 3. F (around the city and to the suburban areas) 4. T 5. F (under construction) 3. Act 3: Answer the questions (15’) - Have SS run through the questions. - Have SS work in pairs to ask and answer. T reminds SS of finding and underlining the cues for their answers. - T checks by having SS play Lucky choice game. - Give SS some time to complete the task. * Key: 1. In the 20th century. 2. It was a major means of transport for Hanoians. 3. In 1990. 4. The population has increased dramatically. 5. New rail systems including a skytrain and a subway are under way. 6. (Student’ own opinions). - T models to ask and answer about changes in transport systems to lead in the speaking part. Guide SS do the speaking and communication activities at home. III. Speaking: (5’) 1. Work in pairs to list different types of traditional and modern transport systems in Viet Nam - T provides with some suggested ideas for comparison between transport systems in Viet Nam in the past and present. *Suggested answers: Past Present Road types: path, earthen road, trench, brick Road types: underpass, flyover, road, tunnel, alley, tram system skytrain system, skywalk system, Vehicles: bicycle, rickshaw, train, tram cable car, tunnel, alley Vehicles: motorbike, bicycle, coach, train, car, tram, plane 2. Discuss the changes in transport in your neighborhood - Ask SS to work in pairs ask and answer about the transport system then and now using suggested answers in Act 1. - T reminds of using structure with “prefer to”. IV. Communication (3’): 1. Vocabulary: - T reminds SS of the Extra Vocabulary and suggests using synonyms, explanations, or even translations to get their meaning. - T reminds SS of using adjective and adverbs to modify changes. 2. Read, retell the posts and write posts about the recent changes in Viet Nam 2
- - Ask SS to read the example and do the same thing at home. - Report your best post to the class in the next lesson, saying which changes have been the most beneficial for the country. III. Consolidation(2’) - T reminds the main points of the lesson: ✓ Train system in Ha Noi in the past and now ✓ Changes in transport system in your area ✓ Changes in other social fields in Vietnam IV. Homework(1’) - Read the paragraph again. - Practicing saying about changes of Vietnam using adjective clauses and adverbs to modify those changes. - Prepare: U6 Skills 2. 3
